Uncut Gems

Synopsis via Letterboxd:

THIS IS HOW I WIN.

A charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime. Howard must perform a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win.

I guess I’m officially on the Safdie brother’s train. I tend to avoid movies like this because of my anxiety—sticking more to horror for less realistic ways of intentionally facing it—but I over thought this. It wasn’t as bad as I expected but it was a great film. So now I’m just going through their body of work one at a time.

Sandler gets a ton of praise here from just about everywhere—and it is absolutely deserved—but this whole cast is phenomenal. While Sandler’s dramatic turns always make him stand out, LaKeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, Idina Menzel, Eric Bogosian, and Judd Hirsch really rise to the occasion.
