The Menu
I watch a movie and then say it’s one of my favorites. And it’s true every time. I probably have hundreds of favorite movies. I love movies and shows and music and books. I love most things in most genres. I can count on one hand… maybe two, but that’s pushing it… the number of movies I don’t like. I’ve been told I have low standards by film snobs of all different kinds. I just like a lot of shit, and I have a really easy-to-reach nob labeled Suspension of Disbelief and I am able to adjust it in whichever direction I need and to whatever degree.
The Menu is one of my favorites, though.
There is social commentary here, and this movie is wholly honest about how heavy its hand is as it goes about it. I wouldn’t say it’s a horror movie. The build-up for the movie’s first half is so tightly wound you can almost feel it getting closer and closer to snapping under the pressure until the madness finally lets loose.
I like the word cacophony. It fits really well here. The second half of this movie is utterly cacophonous.
You can tell the work and care that went into the movie. And the cast of this film - actors and actresses always at the top of their game - are as always fantastic here.
It’s also regularly fucking hilarious.
