The Pale Blue Eye
I’m not even sure what to say about Scott Cooper’s newest film other than that he is definitely - literally without fail - one of the most consistently fantastic directors currently working.
This list is full of cool stuff and things:
I like most things - as has been said - and I dislike very few movies and shows. Still, all of these movies are exceptional because of the careful hand that handles their subject matter with nuance and without stigmatizing each one I’ve watched multiple times.
I love period pieces, mysteries, genre subversion, and literary references.
All of it is here. Plus, Edgar Allan Poe. And Gillian Anderson. I’m not typing an entire paragraph of these addendums.
And Bale never, ever fails to do a fantastic job. This is his third film with Scott Cooper; they work well together.
As with all Scott Cooper’s films, it’s worth watching for the entirety of the journey and not just the destination.
