The Empty Man

"We can't indict the cosmos."

In the black unknown expanse of the spaces beyond where our sight can reach, lurk nameless eldritch forms. This is the way of cosmic horror.

This film is beautifully shot, fantastically acted, and perfectly understated when it needs to be. I’ve always felt that cosmic horror is hard to do right in movies because of audience expectations. The unknown, the imperceivable, and the indifference of that which creeps into and out of us can’t be explained in a way that is easily digestible. It is the lack of incongruity of things we know can’t possibly exist that scares us. We are just meat for the cosmic grinder. I loved it and I've already ordered the graphic novel it's based on.

This movie is four years old and at first I wondered how I missed it but most likely it just got lost in the horrors of the COVID era. I'm really glad I found this as it's going on my list of favorite horrors.
